Well, here it is. I’ve poured myself out onto these canvases for all to see, interpret and probably judge. This “Art Thing” is a strange and emotionally risky business, but somehow I feel like I’ve emerged and shed the paralyzing fear of judgement by going inward and asking myself why I do it, and the answer I got back was pretty plain and simple — because I love it.

It’s the evolution or process that I love. The “laying down” and “taking out” leaving me with a surface that has history. Each layer is like a chapter in a book and I’m never quite sure how it will end.

I work intuitively. Sometimes clear images come to me in my dreams and manifest into a painting and other times I stand before my easel with nothing in mind. Those times I randomly brush paint onto a blank canvas and wait for it to “talk to me”. If nothing comes, I view it through a mirror backwards or from a different vantage point until an idea presents itself.

My love for the figure usually prevails and the narrative quality of my paintings invite the viewer to conjure up their own story, guided by symbolic imagery and occasionally text. Words are powerful and provide an immediate response and exchange between the artist and audience. This is the connection I want - this is the connection we all want on some basic level. To share and be a part of.
